Bio:

In September of 1948, Eva Mae McMahan gave birth to me, not knowing at the time, of course, the path of aggravation and concern that my life?s path would give her. A Hoosier by birth, and a graduate of Indiana University, the adventure bug bit hard and several years were spent criss-crossing America, hitch hiking, seldom having a soft bed to sleep in.

Arriving in the Seattle area in 1973, I started putting down roots. I met Karen, my life companion in 1975, (we married in 1982) and with her encouragement, I started a career in real estate sales in Everett Washington. Together, in 1991, we opened our own brokerage firm, Windermere Real Estate in Everett, retiring at the end of 2006.

Now is the time to explore again. To feel again, the sense of adventure that I experienced in my youth. Inhaling the fresh outdoor morning air. To see parts of the country that I had not seen before, in a manner allowing absorption through the slow pace of bicycling. Mountains, woods, rolling hills, fields of crops. Small towns. Making friends along the way. Visiting relatives.

This trip is scheduled to start in Everett, Washington and will end in Raleigh, North Carolina. It will be approximately 3,800 miles. Our plan is for Karen to fly in to Raleigh, and then we will vacation for several weeks before returning home. The bike will be shipped back home.

Departure will be on May 26. I hope to be in Raleigh by September 1st. Overnight accommodations will be in part by camping, in part by staying in motels and the homes of relatives and friends.

Interests:

There was a time when work was all-consuming, to the gradual exclusion of all interests and hobbies. Upon the start of our business, I made a conscious decision to re-develop interests. At the time, gardening became the way to decompress from business pressures.

Sensing a lack of physical fitness, I started putting together an exercise regimen that would be sustainable as I aged. Bicycling has certainly become a large part of my exercise regimen. Lap swimming, pilates and spinning classes help to create diversity of exercise, but I prefer to be outside weather-permitting.

The Rotary Club of Everett has become a great source of enjoyment. Getting to know wonderful people, dedicated to enriching our community with their time, efforts and money, has been a very rewarding experience.

Golf is one of those activities that is better started in one's youth. Since that was not the case for me (I started playing in 2002) my scores reflect the late start, but they don't reflect the pure enjoyment that the activity provides.

At some point, since retiring, I expect to renew my photography pursuits. Finding, surprisingly, that there is a creative bone or two in my body, I have enjoyed composing pictures, but have not participated in this activity near as much as I expect to in the future.

Karen and I have two interests that we just love. One is live theater, especially musicals. The other is watching the Seattle Seahawks play (and hopefully win).

We hope to do quite a bit of travel in our later years, God willing, and have done a lot already. This bicycle adventure is unusual in that it is not something that we are doing together but we plan to meet in Raleigh and see some of the lovely east coast.
